Three MCGs’ worth of green open space is coming to Preston
Preston is about to get an impressive makeover of the green variety, with an impressive 60,000 square metres of open space coming soon to the burgeoning suburb.
Preston is about to get an impressive makeover of the green variety, set to make the flourishing suburb an even more desirable place to live for young, old and all ages in between.
Under the elevated Mernda rail line, works for The Preston Level Crossing Removal Project are making way for three MCG’s worth of open, green and amenity filled space in a bid to further increase Preston’s liveability.
The space will be home to over 700 lush trees, 150,000 grasses, shrubs and ground cover plants, meaning you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes time to pick the perfect picnic spot to settle in to for the afternoon. A barbeque area will also make for a fun-filled family day out.
The kids will be entertained for hours with two nature-based playgrounds, and fitness enthusiasts will welcome the addition of an outdoor gym space complete with workout stations and equipment.
Community events will come to life with a new outdoor amphitheatre, and a shared walking/cycling path that connects the new Preston and Bell stations is sure to be frequented by the locals.
The new spaces were all designed with help from the Preston Open Space Advisory panel, using feedback collected from the local community last year. The impressive project is set to be complete in 2023.
How can this new green space benefit you and your lifestyle?
With Aussies favouring apartments over houses, the need for outdoor shared spaces and local amenities is increasing.
National data shows people living more than 1km away from a green space are said to have 42% higher odds of being stressed out as opposed to those living less than 300 metres from a green space.
Those living in leafy green neighbourhoods were also significantly more likely to walk or exercise at least once a week, while homes in greener areas were said to be up to 7% higherinvalue than those in areas without access to outdoor spaces.
In terms of lifestyle benefits - whether you love a low-key picnic, can’t miss your morning run or want to let the little ones run free at the local playground, the Preston open space project will cater to all routines, while life at Due North means benefiting from these open spaces every day.
