What is a 20 Minute Neighbourhood?

Aug 03, 2020

When it comes to choosing a suburb to call home, there are many factors to consider. Should you opt for a neighbourhood that’s close to work? Somewhere within walking distance to the best coffee in town? Or the local train station? Perhaps you’re more drawn to an area that’ll give you access to premium schooling options? In the past, you may have had to choose just one or two of these perks, but these days it’s possible to have it all.

Where Should I Live?

With Melburnians "living local" thanks to the recent Coronavirus pandemic, many people are re-discovering their local suburbs and realising that some neighbourhoods are more liveable than others, bringing the 20-minute neighbourhood back into the spotlight.

The Urban Developer spoke (External link) to University of New South Wales Built Environment professor Linda Corkery who said “People are rediscovering their local areas, and we’re seeing increased use of local parks and streets for daily exercise. And we’re taking more notice of the amenity, or lack of, in local neighbourhood environments.”

At Caydon, we've been fans of the concept for years, that's why all our apartments follow our 10|20 model - you're never 20 minutes from life's necessities and never more than 10km from Melbourne's CBD.

What is a 20-Minute Neighbourhood?

In 2018, Plan Melbourne launched the 20 Minute Neighbourhoods program, designed to foster the development of vibrant and inclusive neighbourhoods. The idea was that residents could meet their everyday needs within a 20-minute walk, bike ride or public transport journey of their home.

It’s also a concept that we embody at Caydon. Each of our developments has been designed to ensure residents have access to great local cafes and restaurants, shopping, transport, education and medical resources.

Take Rise at Mason Sq., for example. Located just down the road from Moonee Ponds’ Darling Street Espresso, you’re never far from a delicious specialty coffee and laid-back brunch. And after all, that’s what Melbourne is all about. You’re also well within walking distance of an array of vibrant bars, restaurants, organic grocers and artisan retail stores.

Your furry friends can also take advantage of the benefits of a 20-minute neighbourhood. Caydon apartments are close to local parks and gardens for your dog to run around. In fact, an amazing location is one of our top tips for choosing a pet-friendly apartment. Even if you don’t own a canine companion, there are plenty of options to breathe in the fresh air and stretch your legs close to home.

When investing in a new home, you want to ensure you can live happily in the neighbourhood for many years to come. Often this means planning ahead and considering what local education and family-friendly facilities are available.

HOME By Caydon, in the tightly held suburb of Alphington, is close to some of Melbourne’s top primary and secondary schools, while multiple universities are within an easy 20-minute drive.

Limiting your daily commute is also a great lifestyle benefit. So, not only are Caydon apartments located within a 20-minute neighbourhood, but they’re also within 10km of the CBD making getting to and from work easy, either by car or public transport.

Not only is The Malt District only 2.5km of the city, but with offices for some of Melbourne’s most innovative businesses also set to call the district home, your commute could decrease to just a few minutes’ walk.

Gone are the days of having to choose between location and lifestyle. The introduction of 20-minute neighbourhoods, mean Melbourne residents truly can have it all.
